We love taking trips, whether it’s a road trip or a holiday abroad to some exotic destination. But all too often we fail to plan for our trip and the result is frustration and annoyance. Below are 7 favourite travel tips chosen by Al Rayan to make your trip safe and secure as well as more enjoyable.

1. For road trips, get the right maps and plan your route thoroughly beforehand. Never reply too much on your GPS satellite navigation. Everything won’t go exactly to plan, but at least you’ll have much fewer nasty surprises, like the satnav suddenly breaking down.

2. Never ever make a joke about sensitive issues, such as bombs and terrorists, near security at an airport. Many people have jokingly mentioned they have a small bomb in their case as their luggage is being inspected. But they tend to regret it later at the police station.

3. Always stay with your personal belongings and never let it out of sight. When you’re at an airport, railway or bus station be careful of pickpocketing and stay alert to your surroundings. Pickpockets often work in teams to steal their victim’s belongings. They use a variety of techniques, such as bumping into you or making a friendly conversation with you, but they are far from being nice to you. These are all decoys designed to distract and take your attention away from what is really happening around you; the theft of your valuables.

4. Always carry extra cash or a credit or debit card on you – for use only in an emergency. Quite often, there is many unexpected extra costs that pop-up which we haven’t budgeted for. These include taxes, surcharges and fees, tipping and most importantly in the event of a medical emergency.

5. The most obvious thing to check before setting off on your trip is the the local weather of your destination! You don’t want to arrive in a tee shirt if it’s snowing, or in a fur coat if there’s a heat wave.

6. When travelling with children bring along recent photos of each one. If a child gets lost, the photo will prove invaluable in helping to locate your child again.

7. This is probably one of the most important tip that deserves to be at the top of this list; before setting off and once at your destination – make sure you have all the contact details of who to contact in the event of an emergency and also the procedure you must follow. This could be a matter of life and death so it is very important that you are fully rehearsed.

It’s a little known fact that travelling broadens the mind. For holiday makers, travelling can also be the ultimate stress release and the ideal way to relax and have fun. Not only does travelling teach you more about other cultures, but it also teaches you more about yourself. Whatever the reason maybe for your travels – you should always avoid unnecessary risks by staying out of danger. The 7 top travel tips, as highlighted above, has been specially selected by Al Rayan to keep you safe and secure while, at the same time, helping you get the most out of your trip. Have fun!
